XII std. exams are over, results are yet to be revealed and a few entrance tests are already over. This is the most crucial time of a student’s life and it indeed needs lots of planning and preparation. There are various factors taking shape in a student’s mind. Be it their interest, employment scope, future demand or growth opportunities, every factor needs attention and consideration. Do mind it well that mainstream courses are not the only way out for a bright career. There are many courses available to students after 12th std. Students must not hesitate to take non-conventional courses after science stream in 12th std. It’s all fine to opt a particular field as far as you find it interesting. Amidst a plethora of courses here are some courses that you need to know before making a right career choice.
Bachelor of journalism is a 3-year undergraduate program. Different universities have their programs under different names like- Bachelor of journalism, bachelor of communication and journalism, BA in Journalism and mass communication etc. Journalism has a wide range of streams in itself. One can choose to be in a technical field, writing field, advertising and PR, editing, corporate communication, TV and film production and obviously journalist.
2. Architecture and Planning
B.Arch and B.planning are other exciting courses which require a tinge of creativity with knowledge. An architect deals with designing structures, be it residential, commercial or public utility structure, it needs to be designed in the most efficient and aesthetic way. A major number of institutes accept JEE Main score. Another entrance exam is NATA which ensures admission in various universities across India. Architecture and planning have further specialization of field’s like- landscape architecture, town planning, transportation planning etc.
3. Commercial Pilot
Students who have studied science and mathematics in their 12th std. curriculum are eligible to go for commercial pilot training. It is a profession which demands sound physical and mental health. Students can attend a flight training institute to join a 2-3 year course. The duration, of course, varies from one institute to other. After training, one can join any private or nationalized airline as a ferry or commercial pilot.
4. Fashion Designing
This field of study is usually misunderstood as fashion and apparel designing. There are various other fields to build a good career as a designer. B.des is a 4-year long course offered by few IITs, NID, NIFT and other universities. Students can choose various streams like- furniture and interior design, glass and ceramic design, animation and film design, product design, visual communication, fashion and accessory design etc. CEED is the entrance test for admission in B.des program in IITs while NID conducts NID-DAT for its admission followed by studio test and interview. Various other universities also conduct their own exams.
5. Hospitality Management
There is an exponential increase in opportunities associated with hospitality industry over the past few years. There is all kind of different courses to suit every student’s needs. Degree, diploma, and even certificate courses are available in this field. The National council of hotel management and catering technology conducts joint hotel management entrance exam every year in April where students of science background with good command over English can apply. The various courses available for students are- BA in hotel management, B.Sc in hotel management, BBA in hotel management, certificate course in catering technology and hotel management.
6. Merchant Navy
Students who are interested in a career full of adventure and challenges yet full of discipline can appear for the entrance test conducted by UPSC for NDA. The students can choose to be in officer posts or sailor posts. Only unmarried men within the age limit 16.5 to 19 years with Physics, chemistry and mathematics in 12th std are eligible to appear for the exam which is then followed by SSB interview, physical and medical tests.
7. Computer Software and Application
BCA (bachelor of computer application) is a 3-year undergraduate course which encompasses computer software, applications, programming and information technology. Students who have passed 12th std. in any stream are eligible to apply. Few universities have their own entrance test. This course develops you to pursue a career in- software development, system management, web designing and computer hardware. With these skills one can opt profession as a- computer programmer, system analyst, testing engineer, technical writer, system administrator etc.
8. Management Courses
Students with any stream in 12th std. are eligible to pursue management education. There are many popular courses in India’s most prestigious institutes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level which provides bright career opportunities. The courses available are- BBA, BMS, BBS, BBE etc. and the specialized stream are the international business, tour, and travel management, event management, hotel management, finance etc.
